Planet Cornflower Blue Skies

After much writerly hemming and hawing... I finally started Chapter One of my Notes from Planet New Mexico!

Challenge number one was conquering my fear of beginning. Ufff... painful indeed.

Challenge number two was much more pleasant: How to describe that peculiar shade of blue of New Mexico skies? What to call that intense, happy, happy, deceptively clear and simple blue?

Wikipedia's "Shades of Blue" proved quite helpful.

I think my answer is "cornflower blue." I googled a cornflower image.

Yes. I think so. Delicious-sounding, gorgeous-looking, deceptively clear and simple cornflower blue.

Do those of you who have witnessed New Mexico skies agree? Or would you go for a different shade of blue?

You just may have it! Cornflower or Royal blue. I can't believe wikipedia has an entry on the color blue: too cool. Also the photo is perhaps most accurate of all, because when you look up into the zenith on one of those blue blue days, it shades into deeper tones, just like the flower.

Believe it or not, I don't agree!

The blue of a New Mexico sky is such a peculiar creature -- particularly when spied as the backdrop to an adobe roof.

I love (!) that you are taking the time to do it honor in your writing. Book rec: http://www.amazon.com/Anthropology-Turquoise-Meditations-Landscape-Spirit/dp/B001QCXE0E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326342184&sr=8-2

PROMISE ME you'll read it. :)

No conozco el azul de NM, pero esa flor azul es alucinante, si el cielo de NM es así...ahora entiendo porque estás tan enamorada :) Wow! Es impresionante. Me acuerda a las playas de PR.

Un beso!

stillbreathinggreen: yes! I also thought about those two tones of blue in the sky when I saw the flower.

Suze: you have me very intrigued. is there a particular blue that you think is more appropriate? or is it that there is no just one blue? that book you recommend sounds great! I just ordered it ;-)

Yari: tienes razón! hay un paralelo ahí entre cielo de NM y mar de PR. estoy super intrigada con el libro que menciona Suze porque la autora brega con el turquesa del mar también.

Suze: ooops. I missed the (perhaps) obvious. is it turquoise blue?

I can't remmeber the color, but cornflower blue sounds best than real, which should always be the point anyway! From the rat gray skies of our beloved NYC, your friend who loves you!

You made me crack up with "rat gray skies." It's definitely part of the NYC charm!

I believe new mexico skies have their own color that cant be compared to anything else!!

I agree! This blue sky hue is unique and pre-established blues perhaps don't do the trick.

Maybe, try as I may, descriptive words will not quite do the trick either.

Or maybe they can. Suggestions?

I still keep trying to find the words that will get me at least somewhat close.

Cornflower is close--perhaps closer than any--but as others have said, the color of the NM sky is indescribable.

PD, Raquel, me encanta que estés tan contenta en el Land of Enchantment.

Thanks for weighing in, Pablito!

And now that I read "cornflower" in your response, it makes me think of "corn flour"... blue corn flour! And, yes, that sounds right too: the New Mexico sky as beautiful and nutritious blue dust. Hhhmm...
